The European Commission is actively working to help EU countries modernize their laws regarding online gambling. This includes providing assistance in terms of administrative cooperation between gambling regulatory authorities. The Commission is also working to ensure the highest level of safety is maintained for customers and vulnerable individuals, such as minors. Additionally, the Commission has requested the European Committee for Standardisation to develop a European voluntary standard on reporting, in order to better monitor online gambling services at the national level.
Online gambling standard for reporting in support of supervision
EN17531 is a voluntary standard created to improve the flow of information among EU countries' gambling regulatory authorities, operators, and suppliers. This tool is intended to provide the necessary support for supervision of online gambling services within the Member States. EN17531 enables regulatory authorities to easily access, compare, and share data across the EU. By facilitating these data exchanges, the standard helps to ensure the effective implementation of gambling regulations in the Member States.
The European Union (EU) has established the standard for core elements to be included in reporting regarding online gambling. This standard does not limit the scope of power of EU national authorities in regulating online gambling, nor does it impose any obligation on these authorities to require reporting, grant permission to gambling operators and suppliers, or refuse permission.
The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) has officially adopted a new standard on 29 September 2021. This decision was prompted by a request from the European Commission in April 2018. Consumers in EU countries can now purchase the new standard from CEN members.
